What is a Life Coach?

Once I became a life coach, it was a little difficult to identify as one. I imagined that people would ask, “how are you going to coach someone’s life?”. “Life” is a big word to use. It encompasses quite a bit. Well, it encompasses everything really. Life is everything. We are life. Our experiences are life experiences. Our world, our solar system, our galaxy, our universe, are all life. So how can a “life'' be coached?

Let’s define life a little more meaningfully. What we can say for sure about it is that it is constantly changing. Change is perhaps the dominant constant, as ironic as that may sound. Another aspect of life that we can be certain of is our awareness of it. We are conscious that we are living life. We are certain that we are having a life experience right here and now.

So if change is constant, and awareness is constant, what is possible when we have a coach? A coach, in any dimension of life, is a guide through the change. A coach is someone who helps others create change deliberately. Think of a coach in a sport. The coach of my wrestling team was a dedicated wrestler himself, who learned the sport inside and out, experienced what to do and what not to do, attained success, so much so that he became an excellent candidate to guide others through the process of changing in the sport of wrestling. Ideally, the change is the movement in the direction of becoming more evolved in some way.

As a life coach, I help people change. But remember, change is happening regardless of whether we want it to or not. So let’s talk about being deliberate with how we change. Being someone who was chronically anxious, stressed, and burned out from constant overdoing, I was fortunate to reach a point in which I could no longer go on as I was. I needed a radical change if I was going to get my life back. I needed to shift my way of being if I wanted to be myself again. In that process of realizing who I was and who I wasn’t, I uncovered a multitude of ways to create change in the easiest ways possible. I became a dedicated student to living as the best version of myself and doing so in the most efficient way possible.

As I took dominion over my own life, I realized that other people would benefit from this too. I realized that since I had succeeded in creating deliberate change in my own life in a way that relieved me of my own self-induced suffering, perhaps I was a candidate to guide others through their own process of change. I soon learned that there was an art to this guidance. I couldn’t just tell people what to do and hope that they would do it. I had to learn the art of conversation and reflection. I had to learn to guide people to lead themselves. I learned that people will not change their way of being unless there is an internal shift. I also learned that the way of encouraging this internal shift was to not try to force it to happen, but to create a nurturing space that allows the shift to happen itself at its own pace. However, the client MUST be willing to dedicate themselves to creating this change and be coachable.

So then, what is a life coach? A life coach is someone that guides others to lead themselves through their desired change. A life coach is a partner that creates a healing space for others to change in with grace and ease. A life coach is someone who has done the work themselves and continues to do the work everyday. A life coach is someone who recognizes the potential for immense change in all people and knows how to create the conditions that powerfully influence that change.

As a life coach, I create a space for others to become aware of themselves in a way that allows them to change in the way they want to. In this space, we become aware of our thoughts, our beliefs, our emotions, and our behaviors. In this space, clarity is a constant. What we want, what we don’t want, who we are, who we have been, and who we want to be, all become increasingly clear as we unravel the nature of who we are.

As this awareness expands, the next step is naturally to integrate. We must nurture these parts of ourselves and learn how to accept them with love and compassion. And as we feel ourselves becoming whole, authentic, and so incredibly deserving of that which we want, it becomes so easy to determine what actions we will take. This is the place from which we create new habits. And these new behaviors shape the river of our constant flow of becoming. We then learn even more through the “doing”. From our new sense of Being, we play with the world in this doing, learning what works and what doesn’t. And most importantly, we learn how to be with ourselves in the process of deliberate change. We learn how to be with ourselves as life unfolds, allowing our truest self to express.

This is what a life coach is. Well, this is what I and all the amazing coaches I’ve been coached by are anyways. I am a guide, a partner, a mirror, and a co-creator. I am one who has created a space for himself to change in the most purposeful ways, and I am one who holds this space for others until they can hold it for themselves. I am a pointer towards truth. I am one of many who recognizes that others want to live in the same truth. The truth is that we are here on this earth to be unapologetically ourselves, to heal, and to evolve in the most loving ways with one another. When unobstructed, the body heals itself and is always evolving. The truth is that we are here to create. We are here to joyously participate in the creation of the change that is happening anyways.

Are you ready to change deliberately? Are you ready to become who you were always meant to be? Are you ready to flow free with your true nature and influence all those around you as you do so? If so, you’re in the right place. This is the place if you’re ready to leap into the dance of change. This is the place if you’re ready to  learn the dance moves that allow you to find your own rhythm and express it in the most authentic way. This is the place if you want to sing your own song and beat your own drum. If those analogies are resonant, then click the link below.
